In Kangarootime, every contact added to a family account is assigned one of two contact types: Primary Contacts or Authorized Contacts. Each type has different levels of access and permissions. This article explains the difference between Primary Contacts and Authorized Contacts, how to assign a contact type when adding a new contact to an account, and how to update the contact type for existing contacts on the account.

Primary Contacts:
Primary Contacts are the main points of contact for the account. The primary contact is granted full authority over the account, including billing responsibilities, adding or removing authorized contacts, daily activities, photos, and both student and account messaging.
When an account is created, the first contact is designated as a Primary Contact. Additional Primary Contacts can be entered following the steps below.
How to Add a Primary Contact to an Account
- Select Families from the navigation menu
- Select Accounts
- Select the account to add the primary contact to
- Select Contacts
- Select +Add Contact
- Select Primary Contact
- Enter mandatory fields designated with an *
- Select Continue
- Select Relationship
- Select Save
Authorized Contacts:
Authorized Contacts are individuals added to a family's account who can be assigned specific permissions. These permissions include dropping off and picking up students, viewing activities, account messaging, and billing privileges. Permissions are configured by individual student(s) on the account for appropriate access. Individuals who are listed as an Emergency Contact only should be added to the account as Authorized to ensure consistency and accuracy of all individuals associated with the account.
Adding an Authorized Contact to an Account
- Select Families from the navigation menu
- Select Accounts
- Select the account to add the primary contact to
- Select Contacts
- Select +Add Contact
- Select Authorized Contact
- Enter mandatory fields designated with an *
- On the next page, enter relationship type, pick up permissions, billing permissions, and engagement permissions (including daily activity notes, photos, and account messaging)
- Select Save
Updating Permissions
Permissions may be updated at any time through the family account. One Primary Contact is required per account, and multiple primary contacts may be added to the account. There is no limit on the number of authorized contacts on an account. Changing a contact status can be easily updated in the system.
How to Change a Contact Type on an Existing Contact:
From the account profile, click on Contacts
In the Primary Contacts section, click on the three-dot Action button to change a Primary Contact's permissions or make them an Authorized Contact
In the Contacts section just below, click on the three-dot Action button to change an Authorized Contact's permissions or make them a Primary Contact
How to Add an Existing Contact to an Account
- Select Families from the navigation menu
- Select Accounts
- Choose and select the account you want to add the contact to
- Select +Add Contact
- Select the checkbox labeled Add Existing Contact
- Type the contact's name into the search bar
- Select the correct name from the drop-down menu
- Select Continue
- Choose and select Relationships and appropriate Account Permissions for the Student(s)
- Select Save
